Toshiba shows new methanol fuel cell powered phone

News by Ricky Cadden on Wednesday October 01, 2008.

At CEATEC, which is taking place in Japan, Toshiba showed off its latest innovation with a direct methanol fuel cell(INFO) (DMFC) small enough to fit in a cell phone. DMFC is a new type of battery that uses a reaction between methanol, water, and air to produce electricity.

Though light on technical details, Toshiba mentioned that a 50mL refill cartridge would be able to recharge the phone 15 times. The prototype being shown off was said to get up to 6 hours of talk time, which is double that of similar cell phones.

Toshiba was not able to give specific dates as to when we might see this technology become available, but mentioned that they're pushing for a release next year.
