Today SanDisk announced the October retail availability of new 16GB capacity microSD and Memory Stick Micro (M2) thumbnail sized memory cards for cell phones. The cards, which will retail for US$99.99 and $129.99 respectively, will let microSDHC(INFO) (microSD High Capacity) and M2 compatible devices compete head to head with the high end music phones that are on the market today, such as the 16GB Apple iPhone.

Any current device that supports the 4GB and 8GB microSD cards that are already on the market will also support the new 16GB capacity cards and other microSDHC cards. Those that don't support microSDHC cards are limited to using the older microSD format cards with a maximum capacity of 2GB. All of Sony Ericsson M2 compatible devices will support the new 16GB M2 cards.
