EU to cap roaming SMS charges at 11 Euro cents

News by Michael Oryl on Monday September 22, 2008.

Reuters is reporting that EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding told German magazine Der Spiegel that the cost of sending an SMS while roaming internationally in the EU will cost its citizens at most 11 Euro cents when newly agreed upon rate caps go into effect. Der Spiegel reported last week that the new caps could go into effect as soon as January.

Currently the costs for sending SMS messages while abroad are much higher, with Germans paying 41 Euro cents to send a message while in Spain, for example.

In 2007 the EU approved and put into effect a cap on the cost of voice calls for its citizens when they were roaming internationally within the EU.
