Canadian operators facing SMS class action suit

News by Ricky Cadden on Tuesday July 29, 2008.

Bell and Telus, both carriers operating in Canada, are set to introduce a fee for incoming SMS messages in August. Historically, incoming messages have been free of charge in Canada. With SMS usage rising, the carriers see an untapped source of revenue.

On August 8th for Bell customers, and August 24th for Telus customers, each incoming SMS will be charged at CA$0.15. Customers currently subscribed to a monthly plan will not be affected by the price spike. Each carrier is facing a class action lawsuit in Quebec over the change.
