Symbian open to OS level cooperation with Google

News by Michael Oryl on Wednesday July 16, 2008.

Earlier today smartphone OS marker Symbian's CEO, Nigel Clifford, said that his company was willing "collaborate" further with Google. Symbian's CEO noted that his company already works with Google on an application level by including Google's services in Symbian based smartphones. He then added that Symbian would be open to additional cooperation, even on a "fundamental operating system level."

It should be noted that this statement in and of itself does not mean that Symbian is looking to do anything specifically with Android, Google's smartphone platform. The two smartphone OSes are completely incompatible and share little beyond the fact that they both power smartphones. It is probably best interpreted as a simple good will gesture.

It was only a few weeks back that Nokia announced that it was buying Symbian and that the Symbian OS would be moved into open source, a move largely interpreted as a way to fend off Google's Android and similar platforms, not meant to elicit cooperation between them.
