Nokia Maps 2.0 Officially Launched

News by Ricky Cadden on Thursday May 22, 2008.

Nokia Maps 2.0, which was launched as a beta at the 2008 Mobile World Congress earlier this year, has now officially been released in a full production version. Nokia Maps is a free GPS navigation application, currently limited to Nokia's S60-powered smartphones, though an S40-compatible version is planned for later this year.

New features in Nokia Maps 2.0 include an option for a pedestrian-friendly 'Walk' mode, which gives more foot-friendly navigation guidance, as well as a visual 'bread crumb' trail, to help you keep track of where you've been. Satellite imagery is also available, for a bird's-eye view of your surroundings. Location information and Points of Interest are free, with voice-guided turn-by-turn directions and multimedia city guides offered as premium upgrades.

Nokia Maps 2.0 also includes a PC-based client for easily downloading map data onto the phone's memory card. Alternatively, mapping data can be downloaded on-the-go, using the handset's WiFi or cellular data connection.
