Motorola Successfully Completes EV-DO to LTE Data Handoff

News by Ricky Cadden on Thursday March 27, 2008.

Motorola has completed a test that demonstrated a seamless handoff of data packets from a CDMA/EV-DO network to an otherwise incompatible LTE based network. The technology is a major step for LTE, as it will enable carriers like Verizon Wireless to gradually roll out LTE by offering dual-mode handsets.

The test was conducted using laptops equipped with dual antennas that supported both CDMA/EV-DO and LTE. Once the data stream was started, the device was able to lose LTE connectivity and maintain performance while switching to CDMA/EV-DO, and vice versa.

This handoff technology is important to operators looking to upgrade in the future to LTE since it will offer the ability to roll out LTE while still maintaining their current 3G EV-DO network. Consumers will also see the benefit as they will not need to sacrifice service quality for the higher data speeds offered by LTE.
