Sprints Adds Openwave OpenWeb to Make Web Easier for Non-Smartphones

News by Michael Oryl on Tuesday March 18, 2008.

Today Sprint announced that it will be adding support for Openwave's OpenWeb website rendering technology to its network, which will allow virtually any web-capable Sprint phone to view even non-mobile formatted websites.

The OpenWeb system acts as a transcoder for websites, turning regular HTML and xHTML websites into WAP 2.0 compliant pages that can be easily loaded and rendered by the non-HTML capable browsers found in many basic mobile phones. There are a number of companies that offer this kind of transcoding system, including Google, but the Openwave system will be integrated into Sprint's network and won't require any firmware upgrades or settings configurations on a phone in order to be used.

Sprint said that Openwave's OpenWeb technology will be rolled out nationwide on its network over the next few weeks.
