Alltel Adds WiFi to Services
News by Ricky Cadden on Monday October 08, 2007.
Alltel Wireless today announced a partnership with Boingo Wireless to offer WiFi access to its customers. With Alltel WiFi, users gain access to thousands of hotspots across North and South America. If you have an Alltel Wireless voice plan, you can add unlimited Alltel WiFi usage for an additional $21.99 per month. If you have an Alltel Wireless Internet plan, which provides access to Alltel's EV-DO high-speed cellular network, then you can add the Alltel WiFi package for an additional $9.99 per month. More information can be found at wifi.alltel.com.
Alltel currently offers the HTC PPC6800, which has built-in WiFi support. However, with today's news, it is likely that they will introduce more devices with WiFi built-in. This move might also hint at a possible UMA solution for Alltel in the future, as well. UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) allows for cellular calls to be seamlessly transferred to a WiFi access point. T-Mobile USA recently launched their @Home UMA service.
