RIM Launches GSM/WiFi Equipped BlackBerry 8820 Smartphone

Product Launch by Brad Kellett on Tuesday July 17, 2007.

Research In Motion has taken a step today that many users have been lusting after for some time with the introduction of the new BlackBerry 8820 smartphone, the first from the company to combine GSM cellular connectivity and 802.11a/b/g WiFi for a seamless solution. To make use of its new WiFi connectivity, the device supports unlicensed mobile access (UMA) to seamlessly roam calls between WiFi hotspots and the cellular network.

Being a truly connected device, the BlackBerry 8820 supports quad-band GSM/EDGE for worldwide use, and WEP/WPA/WPA2 encryption for wireless networks. Hiding in the attractive 8800-series design is access to email, instant messaging, PIM functionality, web browsing, and a range of other mobile applications. A built in GPS module opens possibilities for location-based services such as navigation for the 8820.

The RIM BlackBerry 8820 includes the modernized media player as seen on the Curve, and with support for the microSDHC standard is compatible with memory cards up to an astonishing 32GB, which should be more than enough to store your media. Bluetooth with the A2DP stereo headset profile can also be found on the 8820, and using the device is made even easier with the large QVGA resolution display.

The RIM BlackBerry 8820 will be available in Europe in the coming weeks, and is scheduled for launch with AT&T in North America later this summer.
