Motorola has announced a very mildly updated version of the Ming, its Asia-only designer smartphone. Now including EDGE capability for faster data rates, the Ming will be more attractive to both business users and fashion conscious consumers.

While EDGE compatibility seems to be the only change for the updated Motorola Ming, apart from a nice deep red color scheme, it does not make the device any less alluring. With a 2.4" 262k color touchscreen, the Motorola Ming has a unique translation ability: the user can enter a word in their native language and have it spoken by the handset in a foreign language, while simultaneously viewing a definition of the foreign word on screen. This ability works both ways, too, translating foreign words into local language with ease. Bluetooth, a microSD memory card slot, and 2.0 megapixel camera are also available and easily usable though Motorola's Linux-base smartphone user interface.

The updated Motorola Ming will be available during Q1 2007, and while no specifics of regional availability have been announced, it is already shipping in Latin America and Motorola has hinted that they might sell it directly to consumers in North American markets and that it might get picked up by a carrier in Europe.

[We originally misstated that the Ming A1200e would not likely ship outside of Asia. -editor]
