Today Samsung announced the Ultra Special series at the ITU Telecom 2006 show in Hong Kong. The SGH-F500, also known as Ultra Video, is going to be the first phone on the market to directly support the DivX video codec. It has a 2.4" QVGA TFT display and a 2MP camera on board. Just like the other new Ultra Special handset, the F300, the F500 also has dual faces - one side is a phone with a keypad and moderately sized screen, whilst the other houses a large screen and easy to access multimedia controls. The swivel screen allows users to adjust for viewing angle or it can form a stand when the device is placed on a surface. Internal memory is 400MB and you may add an extra 2GB by inserting a microSD card.
Other features of the F500 include UMTS support on the 2100MHz band and GSM/EDGE support on 900, 1800, and 1900MHz bands, as well as Bluetooth v1.2 with A2DP stereo headset support. The F500 can play many different types of media files, including MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC, and WMA audio, as well as MPEG4, H.264, and WMV video. The F500 measures up at 116.4mm x 50.4mm x 10.7mm (4.6" x 2.0" x .4") in size.
Sadly, none of the devices on display were fully functional, so we didn't get the chance to use them. No word yet on when the F500 will be available for sale.
