Nokia Launches S60 Firmware Update Site

News by Michael Oryl on Tuesday August 22, 2006.

It has been a long time in coming, but it looks like the wait is (almost) over. Nokia has recently launched a new S60 firmware update system on their UK website that will allow S60 owners to update the firmware in their handsets without making a trip to the local service center. Depending on the model of the phone, updates will be done with a direct over-the-air (OTA) download or through a USB connection to a PC.

Currently only a small subset of S60 devices are compatible with this service, and we have no word from Nokia as to when/if older existing models will be added to the system or not. The currently supported models, as of the time this story was written, include: N70, N72, 6131, 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682. The related FAQ page states that new models will be "added regularly", but does not go into any details.
