Vertu Struggles to Meet Growing Demand

News by Brad Kellett on Friday August 18, 2006.

Despite very high price tags and somewhat lackluster features, Vertu, the luxury arm of Nokia, is struggling to increase production to keep up with demand, a senior official said on Thursday.

Clad in materials like platinum, gold, and diamond and costing upwards of US$5000 each, a Vertu handset certainly sets itself apart from the pack. While analysts expect Nokia to push out around 330 million handsets this year, Vertu will only sell in numbers around the 'tens of thousands' mark, making the brand very exclusive in any circle.

"At the moment we cannot meet demand. Sales are more than doubling this year. We hope that pace will continue also next year," Chris Harris, Vertu's marketing director, told Reuters on the sidelines of a news conference.

Though Vertu will be bringing out a new handset next month that is expected to increase sales, the brand has been riding on a global economic growth which is showing signs of slowing, possibly affecting business in a negative way. [via Yahoo! News]
