A new version of the operating system for Nokia's 770 Internet Tablet, know as Internet Tablet OS 2006, has been released through the Nokia 770 developers site Maemo.org.

The update to Nokia's first non-phone device addresses many qualms with the older version, as well as introducing several new features to the open source platform. Most notably, the device can now perform instant messaging and Voice Over IP calls through the Google Talk network, and to aid in text entry, the 770 now provides a large on screen finger keyboard.

Nokia has also launched a new portal to house many enhancements and applications for the Nokia 770, called Tableteer, which can be accessed by heading to http://tableteer.nokia.com from a 770.

The Internet Tablet OS 2006 can be downloaded from http://www.maemo.org/downloads/nokia_770, or from the Nokia 770 website.
