LG Announces KG800 'Chocolate' GSM/GPRS Handset

Product Launch by Michael Oryl on Tuesday March 21, 2006.

Today LG Electronics announced that it would begin selling a GSM/GPRS version of its popular "Chocolate" series of slider phones in Europe. The new handset, dubbed the KG800, should look very much like the Chocolate handsets found in the company's home market of Korea, some of which are shown in the photos below.

The KG800 features what LG calls a "hidden" display, and has a number of touch sensitive controls on the top half of the slider that work much like those on the Samsung SGH-E900 we featured from CeBIT. The LG's touch keys, however, remain unseen when not in use. When active, they glow red.

Specs of the European KG800 have not been announced yet, but the Korean market versions feature such things as a 2", 262k color QVGA display, 512MB of internal storage, and a memory card slot. They also have a music player and stereo speakers, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The Korean models weigh about 85g (3oz), as well.

LG stated that the European version of the Chocolate phone will be tailored a bit for that market, and will differ slightly from the Korean models shown below. The KG800 should be available for sale on May 3rd of this year.

RCR Wireless News is reporting that LG has announced that it is planning on bringing the "Chocolate" handsets to the US as well. No word on specific carriers or time frames, nor whether they intend to bring a GSM or CDMA version to the US.
