Back on the 23rd of February, our man in Hong Kong, Sam Chan, attended the SmarTone Vodafone launch party for the new Toshiba TX60, a device that is 99% the same as the Vodafone Japan V803T that was first announced back in September of last year. The TX60 is a triband GSM and UMTS handset that sports a 2.3 megapixel camera, built-in stereo speakers, and a large 2.2", 262k color display. The TX60 comes with a 1GB miniSD memory card and is capable of showing full-screen video. Other features such as Bluetooth and infrared support are also included.
The TX60 is Toshiba's first 3G handset to be offered in Hong Kong.
As a device with backlit external music controls, you can see that the TX60 has a multimedia focus to it. Further evidence of this is the myvu ("my view") personal viewing system that the SmarTone folks were showing off. The myvu glasses are built by MicroOptical Corporation, who also makes similar glasses for the Samsung D600 for Orange in France. The glasses have a pair of small QVGA display that offer the same view as if looking at a 12" display from three feet (1m) distance away. The glasses also have a built-in headset.
You can see a photo of Douglas Li, CEO of SmarTone-Vodafone, and Atsuya Itoigawa, General Manager of Toshiba's Business Development Division, demonstrate the Toshiba TX60 and myvu personal media viewer in the photo above center.
The Toshiba TX60 is currently available in Hong Kong from SmarTone Vodafone and Vodafone Japan K.K. (as the V803t). You'll find more photos of the handset on the following page.
