Nokia launches E60 VOIP Handset
Product Launch by Michael Oryl on Wednesday October 12, 2005.
Nokia E60 |
Nokia E60 |
Nokia's E60 is a classically designed candybar handset that still offers the same basic functionality as its two more extravagant looking Eseries brethren, the E61 and E70. The E60 is a Series 60 3rd Edition device that runs on top of Symbian OS v9.1. The E60 was designed to provide a great voice experience both inside and out of the office, thanks to its triband GSM, WCDMA, and VOIP capabilities over WiFi.
The SIP based VOIP client allows the E60 to hook into compatible WiFi based PBX systems and act as a normal office extension, supporting all of the same features and dialing modes of a regular office phone - including 4 digit extension dialing. OMA DM compatibility means that IT managers can control where their company's data goes, and protect it from prying eyes. The over the air management capability let's IT managers do things such as wipe the data from the phone, or lock the phone all from a remote location.
Like the other two Eseries devices, the E60 supports various push based systems, including: BlackBerry Connect, GoodLink, Nokia Business Center, Seven Mobile Mail, Seven Always-On Mail, and Visto Mobile. The E60 has about 30MB of internal storage available, and can have its storage augmented with RS-MMC flash cards.
The E70 supports WiFi (802.11i/e/g), USB, IR, and Bluetooth v1.2 for data connections above and beyond its GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA capabilities. WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, and IR connections can all be used at the same time. The Bluetooth system can support as many as 6 simultaneous connections at once.
Voice centric features include support for push-to-talk, a handsfree speakerphone, voice dialing, and a vibration alarm. The voice dialing and commands system can be used for dialing, setting profiles, locking the device, and other functions. A new "talking" ringtone function speaks the name of inbound callers if the caller is listed in the phone's contacts.
The Nokia E60 supports the 900, 1800, and 1900Mhz GSM bands as well as the 2100Mhz WCDMA/UMTS band. The E60 measures 115mm x 49mm x 16.9mm (4.5" x 1.9" x .67") in size and weighs 117g (4.1oz). Its large 352x416 TFT display is capable of displaying up to 16M colors. The E60's 970mAh battery should be good for 3 to 6 hours of GSM talk time, and 6 to 8 days of standby time.
The device should be available in Q1 of 2006.
