At a press conference yesterday morning, Palm and Microsoft have finally confirmed what has been rumored for weeks - a Windows Mobile based Treo is on the way.

Though a name for the new device has not been confirmed, preliminary specifications have been released my Palm. The Windows Mobile based Treo is destined for Verizon Wireless, and will use CDMA and EV-DO for wireless access. The Treo will run Windows Mobile 5.0, include Bluetooth, and will have 64MB internal memory plus a SD card slot for memory expansion.

The new Windows Mobile Treo will begin shipping from Q1 2006. Although it is assumed that Palm will be releasing a GSM version of the device, the manufacturer has stated that there are no plans until at least mid way through next year.
