Verizon Offers 3G Samsung SCH-i730

Product Launch by Michael Oryl on Thursday June 23, 2005.

Today Verizon Wireless and Samsung launched the SCH-i730, an EV-DO 3G handset that runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating system.

We first ran into the device back in November of last year at a Samsung USA event in New York. Not much seems to have changed since then. The device supports WiFi networks as well as a vast assortment of Bluetooth profiles that includes: Handsfree, Headset, OBEX Push and Exchange, and Activesync. Interestingly, there is also support for the Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) profile so that the i730 should be usable with the growing number of Bluetooth keyboards that are currently available on the market - assuming that the built-in QWERTY thumbboard was not enough for you.

Other highlights include speaker independent voice dialing and digit dialing, a hands free speakerphone function, built-in stereo speakers that can be used with a variety of music file type, and the normal suite of Microsoft applications.

The SCH-i730's main display is a large 2.8" 65k unit with typical 240x320 pixel resolution. The device has 64MB of internal RAM for running apps and 128MB of internal flash memory for storage. More memory or other devices can be added to the i730 through its SDIO card slot. Lastly, the SCH-i730 packs a speedy 520Mhz Intel PXA 272 processor.

The Samsung SCH-i730 is available to large business customers as of today for $599.99 with a 2 year contract, and will be available to consumers as of July 7th online and in Verizon, Best Buy, and select Radio Shack locations.
