LG Produces Touch Pad Technology for Mobile Phones
News by James Paterson on Thursday June 23, 2005.
LG Electronics have announced they have successfully developed touch-pad technology for use in mobile phones.
LG, the world's fourth largest mobile phone producer, has likened the touch pad to those featured on laptop PCs and says it will allow users to use a wide range of handset applications more easily than using a traditional four-way joystick or d-pad.
Speaking to the Korea Times, an LG spokesman said "This is a new-concept input device that is best suited for mobile phones. We will talk with wireless carriers on when to market handsets with the touch-sensitive mouse." LG also touted the potential security applications of the touchpad, noting that the system can also recognise fingerprints. "Users of the smart sensor-incorporated handsets can configure them to respond only to the owners’ touch by identifying their fingerprints."
Meanwhile, LG's executive vice president Steve Ahn has high hopes for the touchpad. "This technology will change the rules of the mobile phone game in the not-so-distant future by creating a compelling new user interface."
Ahn also suggested that the touchpad could allow manufacturers to produce smaller and slimmer handsets due to the touchpad's small size.
