Samsung Granted SMS Recall Patent
News by James Paterson on Tuesday June 21, 2005.
In a move set to make many texters extremely happy, Samsung has been granted a patent for a system allowing a text message to be remotely deleted from a recipients phone.
The idea itself isn't new - many an office worker's dignity (and, quite often, their job) has been saved by the handy 'recall' function, however this marks the first attempt to introduce such a system on mobile phones.
The patent, available for viewing here, outlines a system where text messages are automatically stored on the senders handset, as well as being sent to the recipient. Should the sender want to recall the message, they can then send a special 'delete' request to the recipient - the recipient's handset would then search for the message and delete it immediately.
The patent was only granted on June 9th, so handsets with delete functionality are not likely to turn up in the near future, however feel free to address any thank you letters to a certain Choi Jong-Ho of Samsung Electronics Co, Korea.
