AT&T has confirmed with us via email that it no longer requires customers to purchase a messaging or data package that totals $20 per month if they buy a messaging phone. AT&T recommends that customers who purchase messaging capable phones purchase a messaging package, but it is no longer a requirement and users may opt to pay per message if they so choose.
