Motorola Shows PEBL V6 With Rubberized Cover

News by Michael Oryl on Thursday June 09, 2005.

While in New York for a Bluetooth SIG event, I noticed that Motorola was showing off, among other things, its new PEBL V6 handset. No big surprise there. What was new and different, though, was the new material used in the cover of the device.

This particular PEBL had Motorola's rubberized soft-touch coating on it, just as is available on the E398 and other handsets. Personally, I love this material for a phone cover. It offers good grip, a bit of extra protection to the phone, and it doesn't attract finger prints nearly as much as a glossy surface does. The original PEBL V6 cover looked something like a deeply polished graphite surface, or something along those lines. It was not only impossible to photograph, but it was an absolute finger print magnet.

This additional cover for the PEBL V6 is going to make it much more appealing to me personally, and I am sure that the extra choice in colors/materials can only boost its eventual sales.

The device I photographed here was functional, but it did not have a SIM card inserted at the time I took these photos. Additionally, the hinge mechanism still wasn't in its final form. Motorola said that they were still working on the weighting of the device and that they needed to add some dampening to the hinge mechanism to keep it from opening too quickly since it has a spring loaded opening mechanism.
