T-Mobile has announced the next generation in its Sidekick lineup: the Android-powered Sidekick 4G by Samsung.

The Sidekick 4G maintains the heritage of the Sidekick, with its spring-loaded screen and five-row keyboard. In addition, it now sports a 3.5 in capacitive touchscreen as well as HSPA+ data, capable of speeds of up to 21Mbps. It has a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor running the show, with Android 2.2 Froyo as its operating system. Also included is a front-facing VGA camera capable of video calls.

In addition to the standard Android applications and social networking software, T-Mobile has added some new apps to the Sidekick 4G, which hearken back to its Sidekick roots as a hardcore messaging device. The Sidekick Group Text feature allows users to participate in group text chats with everything from other smartphones down to the most basic flip phone. Users can create, name, manage, and participate in group text chats all from the app itself. There is also a feature called Cloud Text, which allows Sidekick users to message with others across platforms, using either their Sidekick or their PC. Samsung has also included its Media Hub software, which allows users to rent or buy TV shows and movies directly from their Sidekick.

T-Mobilealso thought to include the DriveSmart app with the Sidekick 4G. DriveSmart encourages safer driving by automatically handling incoming calls and messages while the user is driving by replying back with notes informing the other person that the user is driving.

The T-Mobile Sidekick 4G is expected to be available this spring and will come in two different colors: matte black or pearl magenta. Pricing has yet to be announced. Interested customers can go to sidekick.t-mobile.com for more information.
