Today News Corp officially announced "The Daily," its digital newspaper for Apple's iPad.

The Daily takes advantage of the iPad's support for new in-app subscriptions, allowing users to subscribe to content and have payments auto-renew themselves. The Daily is currently the only app that provides this subscription service, but more digital providers are coming in the future.

"Simply put, the iPad demands that we re-imagine our craft," Rupert Murdoch said during a press event in San Francisco today.

The Daily provides access to an area called "The Carousel," which offers a tiled visualization of new stories that are available. Stories can have audio and video embedded in them, and users can flip through pages to read them.

The Daily has a social-networking tie-in too. Users can share stories on Twitter or Facebook. If a user creates a special area to follow their favorite team, The Daily can also pull in tweets from that team.

News Corp will add new content to the application each morning but it will also provide breaking news updates on regular basis.

The Daily is launching today for $0.99 per week, or $40 per year, and will be available to iPad users from the iTunes app store. [Apple Insider, AllThingsD]
