First Motorola / Apple iTunes Phone Delayed to Summer

News by Michael Oryl on Wednesday March 16, 2005.

It appears that Motorola's first iTunes phone is no longer going to be announced next week at the M3 2005 event in Miami, which is what we had been told to expect for some time now (contrary to all of the reports stating that it would happen at CeBIT, which we knew to be wrong).

I just got off of the phone with a Motorola rep who was checking up on my plans for M3. She told me that the first iTunes phone will be launched this summer and that the device will be available immediately for purchase at that time.

Last night at the Motorola press conference here at CTIA, Motorola CEO Ed Zander was asked about his meeting with Apple's Steve Jobs earlier this week, and about what the disconnect between the two companies was.

Motorola exec Ron Garriques stated that Motorola and Apple come from different worlds. In the mobile phone arena, devices are normally announced 6 to 9 months before they are actually available, so that the carriers have time to see them and add them to their future product catalogs. Apple, on the other hand, announces products when they are actually ready in volume - so that the consumer can buy the new device right away.

It seems that Apple won this battle.
