Today at the 3GSM show in Cannes, France, Nokia introduced the new 6681 and 6682 Series 60 EDGE capable handsets. Both devices are triband GSM; the 6681 supports the 900/1800/1900Mhz bands for world usage, the 6682 supporting the 850/1800/1900Mhz bands for use in the Americas. Otherwise the handsets are the same.

The EDGE system used in the new handsets is capable of download data rates of up to 236.8Kbps, which can be used for playing high-quality streaming video. The 6681 and 6682 handsets also have a 1.3 megapixel on board. The camera is hidden behind an active slide mechanism that serves to protect the camera's lens as well as provide a simple means of turning it on.

Unlike the first megapixel Series 60 device, the 7610, the new handsets also support stereo playback of music, something that is sure to please a lot of folks. Thoughtfully, the 5-way d-pad controller allows access to all of the basic music control features such as play/pause and previous and next track selection.

The new devices also sport a 262k color display and a MMC card slot. Nokia is including a few games such as a 3D snowboarding game on a MMC card in the retail package.

In addition to all of this, the 6681 and 6682 handsets also support Nokia's Push-To-Talk system. The devices measure 108.4mm x 55.2mm x 20.5mm in size and weigh in at 131g.

The handsets are expected to be available in April of this year for an un-subsidized price of about 450EUR.
