Today Research In Motion announced the BlackBerry PlayBook, a 7-inch tablet.

The Blackberry PlayBook measures 130mm x 193mm x 10mm (5.1in x 7.6in x 0.4in) and weighs 400g (14oz). It's powered by the BlackBerry Tablet OS which was built on QNX Neutrino microkernel architecture. RIM says QNX Neutrino is one of the most secure and reliable operating systems in the world.

Under its hood, the BlackBerry PlayBook is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and has 1GB of RAM. It also offers 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity. 3G and 4G models of the device are expected in the future.

The BlackBerry PlayBook offers support for 1080p video playback, and has HDMI out for playing content on an HDTV. Other features include both front and rear facing cameras (3MP and 5MP, respectively), which are both capable of recording HD video. The BlackBerry PlayBook runs a WebKit browser with Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration, and HTML5 support.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is expected to be available in retail outlets and other channels in the United States in early 2011. International rollouts are currently scheduled to begin in calendar Q2 2011. RIM says the BlackBerry PlayBook will be compatible with existing BlackBerry Enterprise Servers right out of the box.
