Today LG Electronics officially launched its Optimus Z Android smartphone for the South Korean market. The new Optimus Z features support for South Korea's T-DMB mobile TV service. The television programs can be viewed on the Z's 3.5-inch "Hyper" HD touchscreen display, which offers 800 x 480 pixel resolution.

The phone will initially run on the Android 2.1 operating system, but LG has promised an upgrade to the Android 2.2 Froyo system before the end of the year. Even without Froyo, the Optimus Z should run quickly due to its 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. A 5 megapixel camera is on board for shooting photos and videos, and the Z even supports Dolby Mobile audio and DivX video.

Among the Optimus Z's most unusual features is its On Screen Phone interface, which allows some of the phone's features, like email and apps, to be accessed from a personal computer through a cable or Bluetooth connection. A cool Drag and Shake feature will let Optimus Z users share media files with a flick of the phone, and media files in general can be kept in sync with a personal computer through LG's Air Sync system.

The LG Optimus Z sports a matte metal finish and measures just over 11mm in thickness. It ships pre-loaded with over 100 applications, 70 of which are not available from the Android Market. Each phone will also feature a carrier specific app store for KT or SK Telecom, depending on which carrier the phone is purchased through. The LG Optimus Z has a 1350mAh internal battery and comes with a spare battery in the box.

Availability and pricing info for the LG Optmius Z have not yet been announced by SK Telecom and KT, though both carriers have started accepting pre-order. LG expects the device to be available in August.
