Tourist Sends Hijacking SMS To Wife
Newsbrief by Michael Oryl on Tuesday December 21, 2004.
Sometimes you really have to wonder what people are thinking.
Take, for example, the Italian tourist who was travelling on a flight from Sydney Airport. The man, Antonio Casale, sent a series of SMS messages to his wife that stated that his plane had been hijacked by Islamic terrorists. Casale sent these messages while his plane was making a routine refueling stop in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.
Casale's wife then alerted the Italian police, who then alerted the Australian authorities that a group of terrorists had possibly boarded Casale's flight in Sydney. The Italian police asked the Australians to conduct background checks on all of the passengers. Anti-terror agents in Kuala Lumpur were also alerted.
Casale was arrested later when his flight landed in Vienna, after it was learned that the text messages were a hoax.
