Qualcomm Demonstrates Dual-Mode Mobile TV Chip

Qualcomm has recently demonstrated a new chip that features support for both the premium MediaFLO mobile TV standard and the free-to-air ISDB-T standard being used in Japan and Brazil. The chip offers manufacturers the ability to offer a single handset with a free and pay mobile TV option without having to support multiple chips.

Qualcomm's MediaFLO mobile TV standard is in use in the United States by both Verizon Wireless and AT&T and offers carriers a premium mobile TV service as an additional source of revenue. The ISDB-T standard is free-to-air and offers a value-added service for operators. The One-Seg version of ISDB-T is used in Japan, while Brazil uses ISDB-TB. Qualcomm's new chip would enable a single handset to support mobile TV in both countries.
