Live 3GSM Photos of the Helix Concept Phone

PDD Helix Design ConceptAs expected, we found British design firm PDD at the 3GSM show in Cannes, France. They were showing off the PDD Helix concept phone that we featured on the site a week ago. The helix is a mechanical mockup of a design that PDD created in order to show hardware manufacturers what they are capable of as a design firm.

The design is mechanically engineered as such that when the handset is closed, the display faces outwards (like a Sony Ericsson S700). Music control buttons as well as call control buttons could be used when the device is closed.

When the device is opened, the display flips around so that it is facing the inside of the clamshell, where a regular numeric keypad would be found. All buttons on this mockup were just painted on, the display itself was also a static image. Only the hinge and swivel display mechanism worked.

I didn't get a chance to actually open and close the device myself, as PDD's insurance company would not allow non-employees to handle it. It is a one of a kind, and it appears to be a bit delicate.

Again, let me reiterate. The PDD Helix is not a real phone, there are no plans to have it manufactured. To those of you that still don't get it: you can not buy one.
