I was on the scene at the 2010 WES event that Research In Motion was hosting in Orlando and had the chance to check out its latest smartphones, including the Bold 9650.

The 9650 will be available in May, and Sprint has already said that it will offer the phone. The Bold 9650 will replace the Tour, and offers some similar features, including a 2.44 inch display with a 480 x 360 pixel resolution. It also comes equipped with 802.11b/g support, a 1,400mAh battery, a 2GB microSD card with support for 32GB cards, and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The most obvious external change, though, is the move to an optical trackpad from the mechanical trackball controller that the Tour uses. The new Wi-Fi support, of course, is quite welcomed as well. But overall, the phone feels very much like the Tour that it replaces. It offers a Bold style QWERTY keyboard and good overall ergonomics. Chances are good that if you liked the Tour, you'll like the new Bold 9650 even more.

The device will retail for $199.99 with a 2-year contract and a mail-in-rebate from Sprint.

Interesting that the BB 9650 is headed for Sprint, but branded with Verizon on the device...just sayin'!
