Siemens' tough new M65 (CeBIT '04)
Gallery by Michael Oryl on Monday April 05, 2004.
Siemens unveiled the replacement to their aging outdoorsy handset, the M55, at this year's CeBIT show. The new model, the M65, is much more robust looking and feeling than its predecessor, if not exactly more attractive. Covered in high-visibility orange rubber and sporting a sturdy metal frame, the M65 is supposed to be dust, splash, and impact resistant.
The internals of the handset are very much inline with other new Siemens models, though. The large 65K color display and the video capable VGA camera, for example, are common to a few other new Siemens models that were announced.
Siemens will be offering a number of accessories for the M65, including an attachable flash for the camera. The coolest accessory, though, has to be the Bike-o-meter. This device lets you attach the M65 to your bike so that it can function as a full-fledged cycling computer. To quote Siemens: "Simply mounted in direct view on the bike’s handlebar, it displays not only information on standard cyclometer functions but it gives you the option to record new tours on the move or to follow predefined trips that are indicated on the phone’s display." That sounds pretty cool to us.
Siemens was showing some variation on the Bike-o-meter system in their booth, and we have included a photo of it in action at the end of this gallery.
You can also watch a (very) short Quicktime movie clip of Julia from Siemens dropping the M65 on the floor to show its durability here.
