Here in Barcelona, before the official start of the Mobile World Congress, we were able to spend some time with Sony Ericsson's new W995 Walkman slider multimedia phone. Taking the Walkman brand a step forward to include a full-feature video experience, Sony is allowing users to enjoy optimized, premium-quality video playback and performance. Users can download video over 3G networks or local WiFi connections, and show content on the phone's bright, 2.6-inch screen.
The W995 Walkman is the first device to feature Media Go, an all-in-one media organization system that transfers, plays, and organizes an abundance of multimedia file formats for ease of use. Users can transfer audio, photos, and video between phones and computers. It handles video encoding on its own, without the need for users to convert video files for compatibility before transferring to their W995 Walkman.
The phone felt very solidly constructed and nice to the touch. The red finish on the unit we had access to was quite nice without being too flashy. The slider mechanism felt smooth, and the display was both bright and colorful.
Two versions of the Sony Ericsson W995 Walkman will be available. One features support for North American 3G network, while the other should work well in Europe and most other parts of the world.
You'll find a live video below and a few extra photos on the following page.
