Last week we had the opportunity to play around with the Nokia N85 that the company launched today. Right off the bat we were smitten with the phone. It appears to offer most everything the N96 does, but does so in a smaller package that has a larger battery. Move over N96, you've been made obsolete already, I'm afraid.
The build quality on the N85 was quite good, and we were pleased with the physical design of the device both in how it looks and how it felt. The prototype unit we were looking at (with the "N00" name in the corner) had a brown back that we are probably not going to see in the USA, at least not initially. But thanks to Nokia making two different tri-band UMTs versions of the N85, we should be seeing this one in the U.S. pretty soon, which is always great news.
Like the N79 that we also checked out, the N85 also sports a small silver colored multimedia key. Pressing the multimedia key brings up a multi-pane view of all of the various media files in the device. You can get a decent look at it in the video below. Something that you can't appreciate fully based on the video is the new active matrix OLED display. The new AMOLED display in the N85, something Nokia recently said it plans to use in many of its phones, is really bright and colorful and should reduce the amount of power needed since it doesn't require a backlight.
We didn't get too in-depth with the N85, but it seems like a really compelling device. We're looking forward to testing it out when it starts shipping soon.
You'll find more live photos of the N85 on the next page.
