We had Sam Chan attend the Sony Ericsson product launch in Hong Kong, and his favorite device at the event was the K850. No surprise considering his love of cameras. The K850 sports a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera that can shoot high quality 30fps QVGA video as well as photos. Sam said that the odd-looking d-pad was actually usable and good for use while texting, but he did find the softkeys to be a bit hard to press. They also seem to lack any kind of backlighting. Of course all of the devices on show at the event were pre-production prototypes, so perhaps this will be addressed by the time the K850 comes to market in Q4 of this year.
[A Sony Ericsson white paper states that the softkeys are indeed supposed to be touch sensitive. It just appears that in the prototypes, at least, they are not sensitive enough. -editor]
One thing that surprised us was that the powered lens cover that opens automatically when the shutter button is pressed is actually behind another piece of glass. Personally, I don't see what the purpose of this is if there is still a piece of exposed glass that can get scratched.
All in all, though, a very cool cameraphone. We look forward to getting our hands on a production model in the coming months.
