Just released one week ago in the phone paradise that is Japan, the Sharp Softbank 910SH is basically nothing less than what you have come to expect from Sharp. With its brilliant 2.4" VGA screen, menus and fonts have never looked so good before. The company has also managed to squeeze a 5 megapixel CCD and a 3x optical zoom module into a reasonably sized body. In fact, the 910SH is smaller than the famous Sharp 903, measuring 106mm x 50mm x 24mm (4.17" x 1.97" x 0.94"), which is 3mm shorter and 5mm thinner than the older model. You will be glad that Sharp has listened to users and has revived the external color display that is missing from its other devices in the recent past.
We were lucky enough to snap some shots with the 910SH's camera at the ITU Telecom World show. The photos are obviously noisier than those taken by the Sharp 903, but are still well above average. The newly added VGA movie recording function is not too bad either, with its maximum frame rate of 30fps. One odd thing about the 910SH is that the microphone is muted when optical zoom is being used, though this is probably done to counteract the noise from the zoom lens, as heard in videos taken with the Nokia N93. The camera start up time and the photo saving time are at least twice as speedy as that of the 903. Sharp "declined to comment" on potential overseas availability of the Sharp 910SH, but we did notice that they did not explicitly exclude the possibility of exporting the device, as they did with the 904SH and 905SH.
For those that don't mind the 8.3MB download, here is a sample 30fps VGA video clip shot with the 910SH.
You'll find more photos of the Sharp 910SH, as well as more sample photos taken with its 5 megapixel camera, on the following pages.
