Sanyo's W41SA was one of the cooler handsets I saw at this year's CeBIT show in Hannover. While it doesn't sport a massive multi-megapixel camera like a lot of Japanese handsets do, it does some cool extra things with its 1.3 megapixel camera that add a bit of fun to the device. In the photos below you will see how a normal photo and a scan of a piece of paper with writing on it can be combined to give you an annotated photo. The shot on the bottom left is of one of the Sanyo reps, the center shot shows my writing being scanned and merged with my photo, and the right hand photo shows the finished product. The color of the scanned text can be changed to any of a number of different colors. While this isn't exactly the kind of technology that will save the world, it is kinda cool, and something that I would think would be quite popular in the Japanese market.
Apart from the scanning and photo merge application, the W41SA is pretty typical of KDDI's EV-DO "Win" handsets. It has stereo speakers, a large 2.3" QVGA TFT display, and an FM radio. The voice recorder app that stores audio in the AAC format is capable of recording up to 12 hours of sound, which is great for meetings or press conferences. There is a regular music player app, of course, and a miniSD memory card can be used to augment storage beyond the device's 50MB of built-in memory. Lastly, the Sanyo W41SA can be used as a fully functional TV remote control.
The W41SA measures 49mm × 99mm × 21mm (1.9" x 3.9" x .8") in size, and weighs 108g (3.8oz). Its battery should be good for about 210 minutes of talk time, or 230 hours of standby time. This CDMA handset is currently available to KDDI customers in Japan (but not elsewhere in the world).
You'll find a few more live CeBIT photos of the Sanyo W41SA on the following page.
