VK Mobile's Thin UMTS VK7000 at CeBIT

Gallery by Michael Oryl on Monday March 13, 2006.

The VK Mobile VK7000 is probably my favorite of the GSM/UMTS VK handsets that I saw at CeBIT. While 1mm thinner than the SLVR L7 from Motorola, the VK7000 packs a lot of extra features into the design that leaves the SLVR L7 behind. On paper, at least. For one, the VK7000 has a 1.3 megapixel camera versus the L7's meager VGA unit. It also makes use of a very sharp 262k color TFT display with a 176x220 pixel resolution.

The thing I find most amazing, though, is that the VK7000 not only supports the 900, 1800, and 1900MHz GSM bands, but it also works on the 2100MHz UMTS band - which explains the presence of the second, forward facing VGA camera for video calls. Speaking of video, the VK7000 is capable of recording MPEG4 video at 15fps in QCIF resolution, and also supports 3GPP streaming video playback.

Bluetooth, MIDP 2.0 JAVA support, and the ability to play MP3, AAC, and AAC+ music files is also included. You can store photos and music files on a microMMC memory card, and USB 2.0 support makes the transfers from your computer all that much faster.

In terms of the design, I really like the fact that VK Mobile went with something that isn't so obviously SLVR inspired. Sure, it is thin, but at least this particular model makes use of a more convention keypad that I honestly like better than the one found on the SLVR L7 that Motorola makes. Considering that it measures only 105mm x 48mm x 9.9mm (4.1" x 1.9" x .4"), the VK7000 certainly has to be one of the most pocketable UMTS handsets around. Of course without doing a real test of the device, we can't tell what the battery and signal reception performance is like, something that is often an issue for super small mobiles. But in any event, this looks like a very solid offering from VK Mobile.
