Microsoft Goes Thin with i-mate's SmartFlip

Gallery by Michael Oryl on Tuesday February 14, 2006.

While taking a break in Microsoft's suite at a hotel across the street from the 3GSM show in Barcelona, I happened to spy the new i-mate SmartFlip, aka HTC Star Trek. The Star Trek is a very thin, RAZR-esque clamshell handset that runs Windows Mobile 5.0.

Sadly, I didn't have my RAZR V3i on me so that I could do some proper comparison photos, so the photos of the device with a Nokia N90 will have to do. Reportedly the SmartFlip sports a 2MP camera and supports push email through the WM5.0 Smartphone messaging/security pack.

The external sub-display normally displays battery, signal, and time, but can also show track information from Windows Media Player. The look of the sub-display can be altered without opening the device, as well (ie. digital clock vs. analog clock, etc).

The SmartFlip is a quad-band GSM device with full support for EDGE. It also has Bluetooth support. No ETA on an official launch date or anything like that, though i-mate is showing the device discreetly at their booth from time to time.
