We grabbed the new Samsung SGH-i320 Windows Mobile smartphone and a Motorola Q for a quick photo shoot at the 3GSM World Congress.
Initial impressions of the i320 are quite favorable. It is a very narrow device, as you can see, and it weighs quite a bit less than the Q does. The keyboard was of some initial concern, but in spite of its compact layout, it seems to work rather well. Some of the people playing with the device preferred the keyboard layout and keys on the SGH-i320 to those found on the Q.
For me, the only problem with the keyboard was the color scheme. The silver numbers on an otherwise all black device were a bit distracting during text input. Perhaps having the alphabetic keys in gray or something else that showed up more against the i320's black body would have worked better, while still keeping the numbers obvious for numeric entry. But physically, it was a good design.
It remains yet to be seen how the entire package will compare once it is ready for production. I have high hopes for it.
