First Impressions of Nokia's Tiny BH-800 Bluetooth Headset

Gallery by Michael Oryl on Tuesday January 10, 2006.

While at the 2006 CES show in Las Vegas, I got the chance to spend some quality time with Nokia's oh so small and cute BH-800 Bluetooth headset.

The new BH-800 shows that Nokia is really starting to take Bluetooth headsets seriously. Not only is the BH-900 incredibly small and light (9g/.3oz), but it sports a very classy, minimalist design that all who saw it seemed to love. The BH-800 comes with two optional pieces of kit: an ear clip and a pendant for wearing the headset around your neck. The wire ear clip can be removed or left in, depending on the user's preference. The pendant allows the headset to be quickly removed with just a tug, and you can put the headset back in the pendant's clip with a single hand after a bit of practice.

In terms of specs, the BH-800 has more to offer than just good looks and low weight. The headset also is Nokia's first device to support the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) spec, which we should start seeing in most new Bluetooth phone designs in the not-so-distant future. It also achieves 8 hours of talk time, which ranks up there with the tiny Bluespoon headsets from Nextlink.

The short story is that I really want one of these. It is as small as the new H5 MINIBLUE from Motorola, but has a more conventional and less protruding look to it. It also has better battery life than the H5, which is always a good thing.

The BH-800 should be available on the market later this quarter for a list price of about US$140.
