We just had a few minutes to check out Sony Ericsson's new Xperia neo smartphone, an Android 2.3 Gingerbread device that's very similar to the Xperia pro, except it lacks a full QWERTY keyboard.

The Xperia neo has a 3.7-inch touchscreen display with an 854 x 480 pixel resolution. It offers a Reality Display with the Mobile BRAVIA Engine which is pretty stunning to look at in real life. The colors pop and text was very crisp.

Like the Xperia pro, the Xperia neo is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MS8255 Snapdragon processor. It also has 8GB of storage, HDMI support, GPS, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Xperia neo is a pretty neat handset - a simple candybar that tapers at the edges, with all the fancy Exmor stuff like the arc has to make photos better. It also records HD video and seemed pretty snappy to react when I used it. Sony Ericsson told us that the new Xperia UI is "lighter" than before, so it doesn't bog the system down too much. The new UI allows users to customize the widget layout, create folders for apps on the home screen, and make a pinch gesture on the screen to show a zoomed-out view of all widgets.

Sony Ericsson says the Xperia neo should be hitting the market at the end of Q1 2011.
