Today I got the chance to play around with with Samsung's new Omnia 7, a device that will be marketed in the USA by AT&T as the Focus. This new smartphone is the first device from Samsung to run on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 platform, and it was launched today in New York at a Microsoft press event.

The Omnia 7 / Focus has a rather sedate design that is entirely functional, if not particularly sexy. But the Super AMOLED(INFO) touchscreen display looked, as always, magnificent and helped set the phone apart from its peers.

The WP7 user experience on the Omnia 7 seemed speedy, and it was quite visually stunning. Microsoft has done a good job at making the UI easy on the eyes, and the Focus makes it look even better.

As the thinnest of the Windows Phone 7 smartphones, the Omnia 7 felt both really good in the hand, and not as bulky as one might expect of a device with a 4-inch display.

The Focus version of the Omnia 7 will go on sale with AT&T starting on November 8.
