Ok, you want to know how I take the photos? Well, here it is.
I am using a pair of Smith Victor 600w Halogen lamps with with translucent 40" umbrellas. The translucent umbrellas give you the option of reflecting the light off of them, as in the photo below, or turning them around and shooting with the light passing through the umbrellas. You lose light as compared with the reflective umbrellas, though, which is why I am using 600W lamps. But keep in mind that 600w Halogen lamps put off a tremendous amount of heat.
If you were to get black backed white umbrellas or reflective silver umbrellas, you would be able to get away with weaker lamps. The light and shadows would be a bit harsher, though. There are times when I think it would be worth the extra light. If I had used non-translucent umbrellas in this shot, the surrounding area would have been much darker and that wasted light would have been reflected back to the subject.
