What is "Wi-Fi Direct"?

Wi-Fi Direct is a certification received by certain WLAN devices that can connect with each other directly, without the need for a home router or other access point. This can be useful for tasks such as wireless printing and sharing of files, and the standard supports one-to-one connections as well as connections between a group of devices.
