Sony ends update support for a number of Xperia smartphones

Sony has been updating plenty of its handsets of late, with the likes of the Xperia M 2 and Xperia Z series all being treated to the latest versions of Android 4.4. However, if you are rocking the Xperia SP, M, L, or C then you can forget about any future support because the Japanese company has cut those devices loose today. Sony confirmed that none of those handsets will get future update beyond today.

Sony has announced today that a whole range of its Xperia Z devices are getting an update to Android 4.4.4, the newest release of Google's mobile OS. The Japanese giant announced the news via its official Twitter account, letting some of its older Xperia Z devices catch up to the newer ones with Android 4.4.4.

Sony has launched its new Xperia Z3 Compact today at IFA, a smaller version of the also announced Xperia Z3 flagship. As we expected, the new Compact follows the Z2 version by offering a complete flagship experience in a smaller form factor. Simply put, if you want a device with a smaller screen then this could be the one for you, and it is infinitely better than handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini and HTC One Mini 2.

Sony has been making wearable devices before its rivals (even Samsung) arrived on the scene, but with Android Wear bringing more companies into the game, the Japanese giant has updated its flagship smartwatch. Announced at IFA in Berlin today, the SmartWatch 3 is Sony's latest wearable and is the first the company has made to run Google's Android Wear platform.

Sony got its IFA underway with its wearables today and the SmartBand Talk got the ball rolling in Berlin. When this device leaked this week I speculated that the Talk meant that this fitness tracker could take calls, but that seemed unlikely. As it turns out the SmartBand Talk can in fact take and make calls thanks to the built in microphone and speaker.

Last week the company issued an image on its website that showed an unknown wearable, which led to speculation that a SmartWatch 3 would land at the Berlin based trade show later in the week.
