India may just appear like just another market that Samsung dominates, but it is much more than that; it is arguably the most important smartphone market right now. It will probably worry Samsung that its place at the top of the Indian pile is being disintegrated, something the company has had to contend with in other markets.

First, let's tackle why the Indian market is the most important at the moment, surely the United States and China are the leading smartphone consumer bases. That is true, but both of those markets are saturated, whereas India is a frontier that is still very much in the "emerging market" category. Samsung has been the dominant force in India for some time, with India's own Micromax in second place.

However, Samsung's hold over its rivals has taken a hit with sales declining through 2015 in India. Not enough to trouble the company?s position at the top, but enough to show once more that Samsung's unprecedented market crushing of two years ago was never going to be sustainable long term. Rivals have closed the gap, but Sammy is still the one to beat.

In India, long term rival Apple is largely missing... it is one of the markets that Cupertino has struggled to get a foothold in.
